Washington upsets #18 Washington State in final Pac 12 meeting between in-state rivals
On Thursday night, Washington and Washington State met in Pullman for the final time as Pac 12 Conference foes. The Cougars entered the final game of the regular season for these two teams with an outside chance at a share of the Pac 12 regular season standings. This chance went to dust after tonight’s results, as Arizona dominated UCLA on the road and Washington State suffered a 74-68 home loss to Washington. The Huskies have had an up-and-down season but will finish the regular season with a bit of hope for the Pac 12 Tournament after Thursday’s win. Koren Johnson scored 23 points and Keion Brooks scored 22 points for the Huskies as they got revenge from their overtime home loss to Washington State early last month. Washington State is still a lock for the NCAA Tournament and will be the 2nd seed in the Pac 12 Tournament, finishing the regular season at 23-8, 14-6 in Pac 12 play.
Exciting action in conference tournaments all across the country
Seven conference tournaments continued or began action throughout Thursday, and there were plenty of exciting games and moments. The first big moment of the day came in the WCC Tournament’s first round, where Pepperdine got off to a 39-2 run to begin the game vs Pacific. The hot start for Pepperdine and awful start for Pacific gave us one of the strangest halftime scores of all time at 56-9, and the Waves would cruise to a 102-43 win. There were plenty of upsets in Thursday’s tournament action, as the Sun Belt #11 seed Texas State upset #6 Southern Miss, Patriot League #6 seed Lehigh upset #3 Lafayette, and Horizon League #6 seed Milwaukee and #7 seed Cleveland State each pulled off upsets. The best game of the night across the country came in the first round of Arch Madness, where #11 UIC took down #6 Southern Illinois 84-82 in double overtime. Xavier Johnson led SIU with 27 points while dishing out seven assists but fouled out halfway through the first overtime. Big time shot making from Isaiah Rivera was key in the UIC Flames’ upset win, as Rivera finished with 28 points on 11-20 shooting.
Atlantic Sun Conference Championship game set for Sunday
If you read through the last section, you may have realized that there were a couple of moments missing from the write-up, but with a tournament as electric as the ASun has been so far, it deserves a full section. The ASun semifinals went down on Thursday night, with #2 Stetson hosting #10 Jacksonville, and #4 Austin Peay hosting #6 North Alabama. In the #4/#6 matchup, Dezi Jones was the main man, leading Austin Peay to a 77-71 win with his 34 points. The #2/#10 matchup was the more exciting of the pair, coming down to the final buzzer. Early in the second half, Stetson jumped out to a 50-40 lead, and it looked like the Hatters could start to pull away from the upset-minded Dolphins. However, the Dolphins were looking to write another chapter in their Cinderella story, going on a 14-1 run to take the lead. With just under five minutes to play, a Robert McCray V three-pointer extended the Dolphins’ lead to 10 points. Stetson then began their slow crawl back, as Stephan Swenson hit a huge three-pointer with 21 seconds left. Seconds later, Swenson hit an even bigger three-pointer, a step-back with just four seconds remaining to give the Hatters a lead they held on to. The final score was 88-87, as Swenson finished with 29 points while going 7-9 from behind the arc in the win, and McCray V led Jacksonville with 36 in the loss, hitting five three-pointers of his own. #2 Stetson will host #4 Austin Peay on Sunday, with the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
