Miami lands commitment from Samford transfer AJ Staton-McCray
Following an extremely disappointing season where the Hurricanes lacked depth all throughout the year, Jim Larranaga has made sure this offseason that next year’s team won’t have the same problem. Having already added five-star freshman Jalil Bethea, top-50 recruit Austin Swartz, and a handful of transfers including 21 ppg scorer Jalen Blackmon from Miami, Larranaga has done a great job. He didn’t stop there though, adding Samford transfer AJ Staton-McCray on Friday.
AJ Staton-McCray finally exceeded his freshmen year statistics this season, and greatly improved his three-point percentage as well. In 2023-24, as a junior, Staton-McCray averaged 11.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg while shooting 44.2% from the field and 41.3% from three-point range. Staton-McCray can affect the game in a lot of different ways and can do it all on both ends, highlighted by an average of 1.6 spg. This was a crucial get late in the offseason for Larranaga, continuing to solidify the depth for next year’s roster.
