#2 Purdue trails Minnesota at half, pulls away late to win 14th straight home game
Purdue came into last night’s game vs Minnesota riding an eight-game winning streak, and at halftime it looked to be in danger. Purdue would turn a 43-35 halftime deficit into a 84-76 win though, outscoring Minnesota by 16 in the second half. Zach Edey battled foul trouble but finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Boilermakers. Braden Smith had a great game himself, scoring 16 points and adding eight rebounds, nine assists and four steals. The Gophers put up a fight as large underdogs, led by Dawson Garcia’s big night, finishing with 24 points. The Gophers went 12-25 from behind the arc, Garcia hitting three, Mike Mitchell hitting four, and Cam Christie hitting three to lead the team. This was Minnesota’s second straight blown lead on the road in the second half, and they’ll now return home to the comforts of Williams Arena for games against Rutgers and Ohio State. Purdue will visit Ohio State on Sunday with a chance to win their tenth consecutive game.
UCLA wins sixth straight game, taking down Colorado at home
Just over a month ago, the UCLA Bruins suffered a 90-44 blowout loss to Utah, dropping their record to 6-10. The season seemed lost, and Mick Cronin was frustrated in every media appearance he had. After the game in Salt Lake City, something must have changed, as the Bruins have now won eight of nine and have climbed up to third place in the Pac 12 at 9-5. Tonight’s win over Colorado was marked with a 19-point performance from Sebastian Mack. Defensively, the Bruins did a great job on Colorado point guard KJ Simpson, who finished with four points on 1-7 shooting. This was the Buffaloes fourth loss in the last five games, and not a loss the Colorado faithful will enjoy, finding themselves on the bubble. UCLA will get their rematch with Utah on Sunday, while Colorado will look to get back on track at USC on Saturday.
Friday’s marquee matchup pits New Mexico against San Diego State at Viejas Arena (10:00 ET, FS1)
New Mexico and San Diego State will meet Friday night with the two teams sharing claim of second place in the Mountain West Conference standings. New Mexico comes in at 20-5 and has won four straight road games in Mountain West play. San Diego State comes in at 19-6, 12-0 at home, so something will have to give tonight at Viejas. The Lobos’ star-studded backcourt consists of Jaelen House (15.6 ppg, 2.5 spg), Donovan Dent (15.6 ppg, 5.8 apg), and Jamal Mashburn (15.3 ppg). The Aztecs’ backcourt will have their hands full, but Lamont Butler (9.4 ppg, 1.5 spg) and Micah Parrish (10.0 ppg, 1.3 spg) pride themselves on the defensive side of the ball. San Diego State should have an advantage inside, with senior forward Jaedon LeDee (20.3 ppg, 8.5 rpg) battling in the paint. This one should be a good one for the neutral fan, with San Diego State looking to avenge an 88-70 loss at The Pit a month ago.
