#2 Purdue falls in Columbus to interim head coach-led Ohio State

In a small Sunday slate, the UConn Huskies were likely the biggest winners of the day. UConn and Purdue were widely thought to be the two best teams in the country, and a Purdue loss shines more light on UConn’s win over Marquette Saturday. The Boilermakers came into Colombus facing an Ohio State team under interim head coach Jake Diebler. It was Diebler’s first game as a head coach, resulting in his first win as the Buckeyes pulled off a 73-69 upset. Jamison Battle went off for the Buckeyes, scoring 19 points with three three-pointers, and Bruce Thornton led the team in scoring with 22 points. Ohio State forced Zach Edey into six turnovers, a season-high mark for the big man. The Buckeyes would win the turnover battle 14-6 and made just enough timely plays to pick up a win that could end up turning their season around. Ohio State heads on the road for matchups at Minnesota and Michigan State, and the only way to keep their at-large hopes alive would be to win both of those games.

Chris Youngblood, Selton Miguel light up #24 FAU in a big win for USF

Two and a half months ago, the South Florida Bulls were 2-4 with losses to UMass, Hofstra, Maine, and Central Michigan. After Sunday’s 90-86 home win over FAU, the Bulls are 19-5 and first place in the AAC. Chris Youngblood started the scoring for USF, scoring 13 of the Bulls’ first 18 points. Selton Miguel took over for Youngblood late in the first half, scoring 14 points and hitting four three-pointers in three minutes of game action. USF grew a 46-31 halftime lead to 68-43 before FAU went on a furious comeback attempt, cutting the deficit to a single point with 22 seconds left. The way USF played for the first 30 minutes of this game had me questioning if they truly lost games to Maine and Central Michigan on that same court. The last 10 minutes left a lot to be desired, but holding on for a win against FAU, a second Quad 1 win for the Bulls, is another huge step in the right direction for Amir Abdur-Rahim in his first year as a head coach. USF will almost certainly need an AAC tournament championship to make the NCAA Tournament this season, but under Amir Abdur-Rahim they should be a force in the AAC for years to come.

Seton Hall uses late comeback to grab road win over St. John’s

Seton Hall and St. John’s met on Sunday afternoon with huge implications for either side’s tournament hopes in the balance. St. John’s jumped out to an 18-point lead in the first half and went into the break leading 41-29. Seton Hall wouldn’t go away though, going on a 11-1 run to take a 50-46 lead in the second half, and ultimately finishing on top with a 68-62 victory. Both teams struggled offensively in this game, but the Pirates were able to churn out 37 free throws, making 25 of them. Al-Amir Dawes scored 19 points and Kadary Richmond scored 18 to lead the Pirates. Seton Hall moves to 10-5 with the win, and now sit a half-game behind Marquette for second place in the Big East. St. John’s has continued their free fall, losing their 8th game out of the last 10. The game was held at UBS Arena, a decision that has left many fans wondering “why?”, with both Madison Square Garden and Carnesecca Arena being options for the Red Storm. This loss likely seals the fate of Rick Pitino’s squad in his first year at the helm, a year that will see them miss out on the tournament for the fourth consecutive tournament.
