Dale Bonner sinks three-pointer at the buzzer to give Ohio State another upset

Following a 1-8 stretch, the Ohio State Buckeyes have won three of their last five games, now including wins over Purdue at home and Michigan State on the road. The win against Sparty on Sunday came in dramatic fashion, as Dale Bonner hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer moments after Tyson Walker went 1-2 at the free throw line to tie the game at 57-57. Freshman Devin Royal was the difference maker in the game, stepping up in the rotation due to the absence of Jamison Battle, and leading the team in scoring with 14 points on 6-8 shooting. It was a defensive struggle, with both team shooting less than 40% from the field, and the Buckeyes held Walker to 12 points on 5-15 shooting, including a 1-6 display from three-point range. Ohio State could now have an outside track to the NCAA Tournament, hosting Nebraska and Michigan before playing at Rutgers to finish the regular season. Michigan State’s own tournament hopes could become worrisome now, as the Spartans have lost back-to-back home games, and finish the regular season playing at Purdue and Indiana, with a home game vs Northwestern sandwiched in-between.

St. John’s takes down #15 Creighton at Madison Square Garden

St. John’s needed a win on Sunday to keep any hope of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and the Johnnies got just that, taking down Creighton 80-66. Daniss Jenkins had one of his best games of the season in St. John’s biggest game yet, scoring 27 points while tallying up six assists, two steals, and two blocks, leading the Red Storm in all four categories. For Creighton, it was Trey Alexander who had a standout game, scoring 31 points in the loss. No Bluejay outside of Alexander scored more than 12 points. St. John’s had won just two of 10, but with back-to-back wins against Georgetown and Creighton, the Johnnies stay alive on the bubble. Creighton was coming off of an upset victory over #1 UConn on Tuesday, and perhaps this game was a bit of a hangover for the Bluejays. Creighton will finish the season with three tough games, hosting Seton Hall and Marquette before finishing the regular season at Villanova.

Memphis takes down FAU in 2023 NCAA Tournament rematch

The clear-cut top two teams during the preseason in the American were FAU and Memphis, and while neither team has lived up to preseason expectations, the game between the two teams on Sunday was all a neutral fan could ask for. Nae’Qwan Tomlin had his best game yet in a Memphis uniform, scoring 21 points while tallying eight rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. David Jones struggled early but got himself going in the second half to finish with 25 points and 11 rebounds, leading Memphis in both categories. Vlad Goldin was a perfect 9-9 from the field, scoring 22 points, but the star FAU guards, Johnell Davis and Alijah Martin struggled from three, going a combined 2-11. Memphis survived the blows inside, and kept pace throughout, taking the lead for good on a David Jones jumper with 6:50 to play, holding on for a 78-74 home win. The Tigers’ at-large bid hopes stay alive for now but could very well come down to the rematch between these two teams in Boca Raton on the final day of the regular season.
