Nevada knocks off #24 San Diego State at home to win third straight

The biggest game of Friday’s slate went down to the wire and was close the entire way. The biggest lead of the game was seven, and no team lead throughout the second half or overtime by more than four points. While both teams battled foul trouble, Nevada maintained the lead until the 3:47 mark in the second half, when a Jay Pal free throw gave the Aztecs their first lead of the game at 53-52. SDSU led throughout the last four minutes, but a late Nick Davidson basket sent the game to overtime tied at 60. After going down by four early in overtime, Kenan Blackshear stepped up for the Wolf Pack, and a Tre Coleman game winner with 12 seconds left would be the clincher as Nevada came back to win 70-66. The win over San Diego State was a crucial one for Nevada, moving them to 5-2 in quad one games.

VCU upsets #18 Dayton in low-scoring, defensive battle

Dayton and VCU put on a defensive clinic in the Siegel Center Friday night, and the Rams were able to get the ranked win over the Flyers at home. Daron Holmes II was held in check all night for Dayton, finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds, but was just 3-8 from the field and 5-13 from the free throw line. Nate Santos had a big game for the Flyers, scoring 19 points, but the rest of his teammates struggled to get going against a great VCU defense. Dayton’s defense did just as great of a job on the Rams attack, with Jason Nelson’s 11 points off the bench being enough to lead the team in scoring. VCU failed to score in the game’s final 5:57, but held on in the final seconds, forcing a last second Holmes II miss to seal the victory, winning 49-47. The Rams have now won eight of nine and are looking to make a late run into the NCAA Tournament field. Even with the loss, the Flyers are still comfortably in the field, and will get a chance at revenge vs VCU on the final day of the regular season.

#13 Baylor takes on #4 Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse in biggest game of the weekend (6:00 ET, ESPN)

Kansas has had a long wait to get back on the floor after a heartbreaking overtime loss to their in-state rivals Kansas State on Monday. The Jayhawks have struggled recently, a record of 3-3 in their last six games, but ride a 17-game home winning streak into tonight’s matchup with Baylor. Baylor has won their last three games, bouncing back from a three-game skid prior to the recent stretch. Freshman Johnny Furphy has emerged for the Jayhawks over the last month, averaging 12.6 points per game over the last seven. The Jayhawks also boast one of the best duos in the country, Hunter Dickinson (18.9 ppg, 11.1 rpg) and Kevin McCullar Jr. (19.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 4.6 apg). Baylor will have their hands full but have a solid duo of their own between freshman Ja’Kobe Walter (14.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and Toledo transfer RayJ Dennis (13.8 ppg, 6.4 apg). The Jayhawks should be able to keep their home winning streak alive, but the Bears will hope to get their first win at Allen Fieldhouse since January 11, 2020.
