NCAA officials present D1 conference commissioners with expanded NCAA Tournament models

The inevitable is soon upon us, as the NCAA is looking to expand our ever-perfect 68-team NCAA Tournament. On Wednesday, NCAA officials presented D1 conference commissioners with two models of an expanded tournament field, one with 68 teams and another with 72 teams.

The expansion is rumored to come in the form of more play-in games, which in my opinion is the best way to go about it. A second First Four location could be inevitable, stacking two games for two nights in both Dayton and another site. If more play-in games is the route the NCAA takes, I hope for the sake of the mid-major schools and conferences that the number of automatic qualifiers relegated to play-in games is kept at four or lowered to zero.

The last time we saw the tournament expand was 2011, as the field expanded to 68 teams and the First Four was invented in Dayton. If expansion does come to fruition in the near future, let’s hope the NCAA can get it as right as they got it last time. Getting the right location of a second play-in site in needs to be on the forefront of the NCAA’s minds, as there aren’t many other cities as basketball-centric as Dayton across the country.
