#11 NC State advances to first Sweet 16 since 2015 with win over #14 Oakland
All five starters scored in double digits for NC State as the Wolfpack advanced to the Sweet 16 with Saturday night’s win over Oakland. DJ Burns Jr. was the star of the show, as the Golden Grizzlies had no match inside for the Wolfpack’s big man. Burns Jr. finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. Jack Gohlke had his moment in Oakland’s upset over Kentucky, but it was Trey Townsend who did the damage on Saturday, finishing with 30 points and 13 rebounds. NC State’s win puts them in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015, and the Wolfpack will matchup against either Colorado or Marquette on Thursday or Friday.
#3 Creighton battles past #11 Oregon in double-overtime
In possibly the best game we’ve seen in the tournament so far, Creighton survived Oregon in double-overtime, outscoring the Ducks 15-2 in the second overtime. Oregon had a chance to win it at the buzzer in regulation, while Creighton had a chance in the first overtime, but neither team converted. Four Creighton players scored 18 or more points in the win, while Oregon got 60 points combined from Jermaine Couisnard and N’Faly Dante. The lack of offensive production outside the Ducks duo was the large part in their downfall, as Jackson Shelstad went down injured and missed much of the late action. Creighton’s win puts them into the Sweet 16 once again, where they’ll meet Tennessee on Thursday or Friday.
