BYU takes down Central Arkansas 88-50 behind Egor Demin’s 18-point, 11-assist night

After Mark Pope left for Kentucky, there was some questions surrounding BYU basketball this offseason, but if game one was any indication, the Cougars will be just fine. Kevin Young came in after a long tenure as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns and his lack of college coaching experience didn’t seem to matter. His knack for finding talent is already showing as well, as all three of his incoming freshmen reached double figures. Egor Demin is the name to keep an eye on as the season continues to roll, an uber-skilled 6-9 wing that produced 18 points, 11 assists, and four steals on opening night. He wasn’t the only youngin’ with a great first game though, as Kanon Catchings, a former Purdue commit, scored 17 points and Serbian Mihailo Boskovic added 11 himself. The Cougars were doubling up Central Arkansas 46-23 at the half and rolled to an 88-50 win, leading by 40 late in the second half.

All five starters reach double digits in Texas Tech’s win over Bethune-Cookman

Texas Tech didn’t get much love from AP voters in the preseason, but I won’t say I didn’t give my fair share of praise to this team headed into the year (#13 in my Preseason Top 100). The Red Raiders backed up my preseason assessment in night one, handling Bethune-Cookman 94-61. Stating the obvious, the competition level wasn’t high, but this team showed ability from many different areas of the floor and did so without their presumed starting point guard in Minnesota transfer Elijah Hawkins. Kerwin Walton may have finally found his footing at Texas Tech, scoring 21 points and knocking down seven three-pointers. Darrion Williams and Chance McMillian, two other returners on the wings, each finished with 17 points, as New Mexico transfer JT Toppin produced 19 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks. I’m all in on the balancing of scoring, shooting, and defense this team has under Grant McCasland this season, and the 16 made threes on over 50% from behind the arc sets the tone for a big year for the Red Raiders.

David N’Guessan’s 21 & 15 lead Kansas State to big win over New Orleans

The Big 12 went 4-0 on the night, but we’ll share Arizona State the embarrassment of discussing their tight win over Idaho State. As for Kansas State, the Wildcats were sweating early on, falling behind 25-15 halfway through the first half, but turned it on after the slow start. A run that spanned either side of halftime, the Wildcats outscored the Privateers 34-7 in under 12 minutes. Transfers Max Jones and Brendan Hausen got themselves rolling during the run, with the duo combining for 36 points and eight made threes on the night. Even with all of the money spent by Kansas State in the portal, the guy with the biggest night for the Wildcats was a returner, David N’Guessan. N’Guessan finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds, establishing himself as a vital piece of the frontcourt even with the marquee offseason signings. There’s plenty of guys that can have big nights for Jerome Tang’s squad, as proven tonight’s box score, and the team should only get stronger when Samford transfer Achor Achor makes his debut.

• Great Osobor goes for 15 points, 17 rebounds, and six steals as Washington holds off UC Davis despite TY Johnson’s 35 points
• Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper debut for #25 Rutgers in home tilt vs Wagner (6:00 ET, BTN)
