#4 Tennessee takes down #11 Auburn at home behind Knecht’s 39 points
In the biggest game of the day, two of the top teams in the SEC went toe to toe in Knoxville. The Tennessee Volunteers would edge out a win over Auburn by a final score of 92-84, coming back from an 8-point second half deficit to win. Auburn had no answer for Dalton Knecht defensively, as Knecht shot 12-21 from the field, including 5-8 from three, and finished with 39 points and three steals. Auburn saw the return of Jaylin Williams after he suffered an injury in the loss to Kentucky. Williams would play 21 minutes, finishing with 12 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Johni Broome led Auburn in points, rebounds, and assists, finishing with a stat line of 23-9-5. The win puts Tennessee into a tie with Alabama for first place in the SEC at 12-3, while Auburn falls to 10-5, in a three-way tie for fourth with Kentucky and Florida. Tennessee will meet Alabama this Saturday in Tuscaloosa for what might be the biggest SEC regular season game of 2023-24.
#18 South Carolina knocks off Texas A&M in the final seconds
The South Carolina Gamecocks have been the surprise of the season in the SEC and continued their winning ways in College Station Wednesday night. The Gamecocks led for a large majority in the game against Texas A&M, but Wade Taylor IV banked in a layup with nine seconds to play, tying the teams at 68-68. South Carolina would push the floor quickly after Taylor’s basket, and Meechie Johnson drove down the left side, collapsing the defense and finding a wide-open Zachary Davis, who would sink the game winning layup with three seconds to play. Johnson finished with 22 points to lead the Gamecocks, while Ta’lon Cooper nearly put up a triple-double with 11 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. The win improves the Gamecocks to 11-4 in the SEC and 23-5 overall, and a win at home over Florida on Saturday would move them into a tie for second in the SEC.
#14 Alabama runs past Ole Miss behind Estrada’s triple-double
Wednesday night marked the 15th time this season that Alabama has scored over 90 points, tallying 103 in its 103-88 win over Ole Miss. With the loss, Ole Miss is now 1-6 in its last seven games, and its at-large bid hopes are dwindling. For Alabama, the win moves them to 12-3 in SEC play, setting up a huge game vs Tennessee that was previously mentioned. Without a doubt in anyone’s mind, Alabama owns the #1 offense in the country, and tonight it was an offense that knocked down 15 three-pointers in route to yet another extremely high-scoring win. Mark Sears went the distance for Alabama, logging 40 minutes while posting 26 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Aaron Estrada will get a lot of credit for his performance as well, logging a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. When Alabama’s offense is at its best, there is no one in the country that can stop it.
