Illinois senior transfer Coleman Hawkins commits to Kansas State

There was one final big fish left in the transfer portal, but as of Friday morning, the last big name standing, Coleman Hawkins, has left the portal, committing to Jerome Tang’s Kansas State Wildcats. Hawkins has spent four seasons at Illinois, averaging 12.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 2.7 apg, and 1.5 spg as a senior this past season.

Hawkins definitely brings a personality to Manhattan, as while finding his next school in the portal, he dragged out his experience through social media and interactions with plenty of fans and players. He’s more than loved by the Illini fanbase as far as I can tell, and has himself a sense of humor as well. Interactions on X with Kansas center Hunter Dickinson went viral over the past few weeks, with a bit of friendly trash talk mixed into the fact that Hawkins was visiting the Jayhawks’ top rival school.

Down I70 from Lawrence, Jerome Tang has built a culture in Manhattan. Most well-known for his vibing to Lil Baby during K-State’s run to the Elite Eight in 2023, Tang has been successful in his first two seasons with the Wildcats. In addition to landing Hawkins, Tang has added Michigan transfer Dug McDaniel (16 ppg, 5 apg), Samford transfer Achor Achor (16 ppg, 6 rpg), and Kentucky transfer Ugonna Onyenso (4 ppg, 5 rpg) this offseason. The Wildcats struggled this past season, possibly due to the loss just before the season began of Nae’Qwan Tomlin, but should bounce back in 2024-25, even in a stacked Big 12 with this core of transfers coming in.
