Clemson never trails in shocking win at #3 UNC
Clemson jumped out to a 17-4 lead on the road against UNC and would never trail in the game. The Tar Heels did make the game close, tying the score at 70 with four minutes to play. Joe Girard III would hit a big three-pointer with just over two minutes to play to put the game out of reach, and Clemson held on to win 80-76. This was UNC’s second loss in three games, losing at Georgia Tech last Tuesday with a home win over Duke sandwiched in between. The Tigers had come into Chapel Hill 3-6 in their last nine games, but a road win over a top three team could be the turning point for Clemson. Brad Brownell is looking to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021, and with the talent this squad has, it’d be a disappointment if they aren’t able to get in this season. Clemson will face a lighter schedule to finish the regular season, and if they can avoid bad losses, they should hear their name called on Selection Sunday.
Nevada snaps #22 Utah State’s 13-game home winning streak
After a rough start to Mountain West play, Nevada looks to be back on track after grabbing a win at Utah State. The Wolf Pack had dropped a home game to Boise State and a road matchup at Wyoming, two games they would’ve liked to have in their search for a second straight NCAA Tournament berth. Steve Alford’s squad pulled out a signature win last night though, winning 77-63 vs the Aggies. Sophomore Nick Davidson was the main man tonight, scoring 25 points on 10-14 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds. Utah State’s leading scorer Great Osobor was held to 11 points, and Nevada did a great job overall defensively. Nevada’s next two games are at home, vs two of the Mountain West’s best teams, San Diego State and New Mexico. Utah State will look to rebound from back-to-back losses with a home game vs Boise State on Saturday.
#12 Auburn hosts red-hot #16 Alabama in round two of basketball’s Iron Bowl (7:00 ET, ESPN2)
After being unable to find a signature win in non-conference play, both Alabama and Auburn have gotten off to great starts in SEC play. Alabama leads the SEC at 8-1, while Auburn enters Wednesday’s matchup in third with a 7-2 record. Alabama has won four straight, a streak started the first time these two teams met, when the Crimson Tide came out on top 79-75. Johni Broome leads Auburn in scoring and rebounding, and after a 25-point, 14-rebound performance wasn’t enough in the first matchup, Broome will need some help from his supporting cast if the Tigers want to come out on top. Auburn enters the game off of back-to-back wins, one of which came on the road over Ole Miss.
