Crazy final minute sees Butler grab crucial win at Creighton
Butler has been climbing up the ranks after a recent three-game win streak and put that streak to the test last night at Creighton. The Bulldogs were up for the test, competing the entire game and controlling most of the second half. Jahmyl Telfort led Butler with 26 points and DJ Davis chipped in with 22 points of his own. The final 34 seconds of the game took around 20 minutes of real time, causing a lot of talk around the college basketball world and the use of replay reviews. A handful of close out-of-bounds calls and bad turnovers from each team led to continuous stoppages. The game’s final play saw Creighton with a side out-of-bounds play, throwing a direct lob to Ryan Kalkbrenner with 0.5 on the clock. The ball was tipped away from Kalkbrenner and Butler held on for a 99-98 victory, giving them a second great road win for their resume to go along with their win at Marquette.
Duke-UNC headlines the best regular season slate of the season (6:30 ET, ESPN)
Duke has won 11 of their last 12 games and UNC had won 10 in a row before a shocking loss to Georgia Tech on Monday. It’s safe to say that both of these teams have been playing good basketball recently (outside of one slip-up each in the recent weeks). UNC freshman Elliot Cadeau has played increasingly well, and his early 5th foul was a key factor in UNC falling to Georgia Tech. Duke has a freshman of their own whose had a great last few games, Jared McCain. McCain’s best game of the season came last Saturday in the Blue Devils win over Clemson, headlined by a 21-point performance. The lights will be bright in Chapel Hill on Saturday, and we can only hope the stars will shine. RJ Davis and Kyle Filipowski are both All-American caliber players and are likely each other’s best competition for the Player of the Year race in the ACC.
Kentucky hosts Tennessee in top-10 matchup (8:30 ET, ESPN)
In a battle of two teams who were recently upset by South Carolina, there likely isn’t a bigger game for either team until the rematch on the final day of the regular season. Kentucky needs to rebound and win this one at home after two shocking losses in the last three games. Tennessee needs to get back on track after their home loss to South Carolina on Tuesday. Kentucky’s Antonio Reeves has quietly been putting together an SEC POTY candidate season, averaging 19.5 ppg and 4.4 rpg for the Wildcats. The leader in the race for the award lines up on the other side of the court tonight however, with Tennessee’s Dalton Knecht, who averages 20.1 ppg and 4.6 rpg. Look for this one to come down to the final possessions in Rupp Arena.
