Johni Broome and Jaylin Williams combine for 50 as #12 Auburn beats #16 Alabama
After a tight loss on the road to Alabama two weeks ago, Bruce Pearl had his Auburn team ready to play last night. The first half was up and down, non-stop offensive action, and both teams were tight for the first 16 minutes. A Johni Broome three-pointer ignited a 16-2 run for the Tigers to finish the half, and Auburn held a 55-41 halftime lead with all the momentum. Auburn pounded the ball inside all game long, leading to 50 free throw attempts as a team, 26 points from Jaylin Williams, and 24 points from Broome. The Tigers will now take a three-game win streak into a big road game against Florida this Saturday. Mark Sears made a living of his own at the free throw line, but his 25 points were not enough for the Crimson Tide, as they’ll look to bounce back from the loss with a game at LSU on Saturday.
Michigan grabs shocking home win over #11 Wisconsin
Juwan Howard’s Michigan squad had won just one of their last 11 games but pulled off a big upset over Wisconsin last night. Dug McDaniel had a big game, scoring 16 points including a key jumper late on and a handful of free throws to ice the game. With repeated second half collapses in recent games, a four-point halftime lead was anything but safe for the Wolverines. Last night would be a different story though, outscoring Wisconsin 28-20 over the last 14 minutes. Michigan moves to just 8-15, and now head on a two-game road trip for games at Nebraska and Illinois. Wisconsin was led by AJ Storr’s 20 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Badgers lost a third straight game. A road test for the Badgers at Rutgers looms this Saturday.
#8 Arizona visits Utah amidst road struggles (8:00 ET, PACN)
The Arizona Wildcats have won just one of their last four road games and will visit a Utah team tonight who is 12-0 at home. Arizona comes in having won their last three games, but the inconsistencies in the squad have been a talking point throughout Pac 12 play. The Utes have been great at home, but inconsistent in their own right, going winless on the road in conference play so far. The headlined matchup in this one will be Arizona’s Oumar Ballo (13.0 ppg, 9.4 rpg) vs Utah’s Branden Carlson (16.1 ppg, 6.4 rpg). The Utes should be able to keep it close, and will be hoping Gabe Madsen (13.0 ppg, 42.0% 3PT) can get back on track from behind the arc following a cold stretch.
