Auburn dominates Florida to win SEC Championship
The Auburn Tigers took down Florida in the SEC Championship game on Sunday afternoon behind Johni Broome’s 19 points and 11 rebounds. Auburn’s defense was the staple point of the victory, holding Florida to 36.4% from the field and 1-13 from three. The story of the game on Florida’s end was the injury of Micah Handlogten in the opening minutes. Without Handlogten, there is a bit of a hole in the frontcourt for the upcoming NCAA Tournament, where Florida could match up against the likes of Tyson Degenhart and Omar Stanley or Tristan da Silva and Eddie Lampkin Jr. Auburn now has won six in a row and will open their quest for a national championship against Yale in the opening round.
Terrence Shannon Jr. scores 34 points as Illinois takes down Wisconsin
Two red hot teams met in the Target Center on Sunday afternoon for the Big Ten Championship, with Illinois coming out on top over Wisconsin 93-87. Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 34 points and Marcus Domask added 26 points to lead the Fighting Illini’s high-powered offense. The Badgers were led by 24 points from AJ Storr, albeit inefficient, as Storr went 7-20 from the field. The Illini take their momentum into the NCAA Tournament, matching up against Morehead State in the first round. The Badgers match up against James Madison, which should be one of the most hyped-up games of the first round.
Selection Show gives plenty of talking points
The Selection Show officially tips off March Madness every year, and this year there were plenty of questionable decisions made by the committee. The Mountain West got six bids, but the seeding of their teams (5,8,10,10,10,11) was much lower than expected. The Big East will be another conference that feels hard done, as the conference ranks second in the country on KenPom but received just three bids. Oklahoma and St. John’s will be two of the teams that feel hard done by the committee, as Virginia slotted in as a 10 seed, with most people seeing the Cavaliers on the outside. Millions of brackets will be filled out over the next few days, and I think the final one I fill out will have Houston on the National Champion line.
