#22 Texas A&M upsets #1 Auburn, a pair of double-overtime games, and so much more across Tuesday’s power conference slate

Usually, when the calendar switches to March, regular season basketball moves to the back burner and conference tournament action takes the headlines. Not on Tuesday though, as there was plenty of wild results and must-see finishes across the country in half of the nation’s final week of the regular season.

#22 Texas A&M had the most eye-opening result of the night, capping Senior Night with an 83-72 stunner over #1 Auburn. In a truly wild box score, you’ll find Texas A&M outrebounded Auburn 41-25 on the game, securing an astounding 24 offensive rebounds on the night, leading to 29 second-chance points for A&M. It’s not often a veteran Auburn team will get killed on the glass like that, but if there’s one team in the country who can do it, its Texas A&M. The Aggies also got a solid enough night scoring-wise from its backcourt stars Wade Taylor IV and Zhuric Phelps, as Taylor IV finished with 16 points in the night his jersey was raised to the rafters and Phelps led the way with 19 points off the bench. Breaking a four-game losing streak, all of a sudden Texas A&M has a huge boost of momentum going into the final game of the regular season and into the postseason.

Double overtime was a theme of the night, as #23 BYU and #10 Iowa State found themselves in a 50-minute game, as well as Nebraska and Ohio State. BYU and Iowa State are both locked into the NCAA Tournament field at this point, but that doesn’t mean this one didn’t still have plenty on the line at Hilton Coliseum. After trailing by 21 with 13 minutes to go, Iowa State executed an amazing comeback to send the game into a first overtime, but Egor Demin rescued BYU with a late layup to push the game into a second extra period. In the second overtime, Iowa State failed to score on three straight possessions trailing by just two, ultimately falling 88-85 on its home floor for the second time this season.

In the other double overtime game, it was a similar story, as Nebraska came back from down double digits twice in the second half before giving up a five-point lead in the first overtime to send it to a second. Brice Williams did all he could to keep Nebraska in the game, finishing with 43 points, but ultimately the Cornhuskers were undone by Bruce Thornton and Micah Parrish’s clutch shot making, as Thornton finished with 29 and Parrish added 22 to lead Ohio State. A huge game on the bubble with both teams fighting to stay in the tournament field, but it wasn’t the only bubble game full of drama.

Going to the SEC, it was Texas and Arkansas who made big strides in securing their places in the 68-team field, each picking up road wins against projected tournament teams. Tre Johnson and Tramon Mark combined for 47 for Texas, as the Longhorns picked up an 87-82 overtime win in Starkville over #25 Mississippi State while shooting 11-of-23 from behind the arc as a team. After nearly throwing away its season against South Carolina, John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks bounced back with a 90-77 win at Vanderbilt. The Hogs were led by Johnell Davis’s 21 points, as the FAU transfer continued his late-season resurgence.

West Virginia and New Mexico were also on the right side of the bubble coming into the night, and should stay put, each picking up a crucial road win. West Virginia fended off a late Utah comeback attempt, knocking off the Utes on the road 71-69 while New Mexico’s Donovan Dent had another headline performance with 33 points and seven assists in the Lobos’ 71-67 win at Nevada.

Two teams on the bubble who didn’t share the same success on the road though were San Diego State and Villanova, each falling to teams well outside the projected field. San Diego State lost at UNLV 74-67, giving up 42 second-half points and 26 on the night to UNLV guard Julian Rishwain. Villanova was in it until the end on the road against Georgetown, but Hoyas guard Jayden Epps sunk Villanova’s slim at-large chances with a late runner to win it 75-73 for Georgetown. With plenty of late drama at the top and on the bubble, Tuesday night’s slate could go down as the best weekday slate of the season.
