Marcus Foster’s 22 points leads the way in Xavier’s comeback win over Texas

The First Four in Dayton, Ohio delivered one final thriller in 2025 late on Wednesday night, as Xavier won a de facto home game against Texas.

It wasn’t always Xavier’s game to win though, as Texas started hot and lead 23-13 eight minutes into the game. Tre Johnson and Tramon Mark led Texas in scoring on the night with 23 points and 16 points respectively, with both getting going throughout the first half. After Xavier drew within six on a Jerome Hunter three-pointer, Mark hit a shot at the buzzer to give the Longhorns a 47-39 halftime advantage.

Johnson led Texas out of the locker room with two big threes early on in the second half as the Longhorns kept Xavier at arms’ length, but finally the Musketeers broke through. Trailing 64-57 with less than ten minutes to go, Xavier rattled off an 8-1 run as another Hunter three tied the game at 65-65.

Texas would respond right back though, as Kadin Shedrick scored six straight for the Longhorns to push Texas in front by four. Tre Johnson then quickly answered a Marcus Foster three within 15 seconds and Texas led 74-70, seemingly having momentum with under seven minutes to go.

Everything changed after that basket though, as Xavier scored eight straight, highlighted by a John Hugley IV three-pointer to take the lead and followed up by a Dailyn Swain and-one in transition. Texas responded right back with four straight to even the game at 78-78 with Mark scoring one basket and assisting another.

To push back in front, Xavier went to its veteran big man and leader Zach Freemantle, who hit a beautiful turn around hook shot for an 80-78 advantage. A minute and a half later, it was Dailyn Swain who clinched the game for Xavier on the offensive glass, sliding himself into perfect position after a Freemantle missed three.

Xavier would win by a final tally of 86-80, getting 22 points off four three-pointers from Marcus Foster while Freemantle, Swain, Ryan Conwell, and Dante Maddox Jr. all reached double figures. The Musketeers advance into the round of 64, where they’ll play sixth-seeded Illinois in Milwaukee inside the Midwest Region.
