Jaemyn Brakefield goes for 19 off the bench to lead Ole Miss to upset win on Senior Night
Conference tournament play has begun to heat up across the country, but on Thursday night in Iowa City, there was silverware at stake. With a win over Iowa on the road, Michigan State would claim the outright Big Ten regular season title, and the Spartans did just that, turning a 14-point deficit into a 17-point lead before winning 91-84.
As it’s done all season, Michigan State used a balanced scoring load to get the job done, with nine Spartans scoring and five reaching double-figures. The play of freshman Jase Richardson has been the catalyst for Michigan State’s recent run of form over the last month, as Richardson logged his eighth straight game with at least 11 points, scoring 22 against the Hawkeyes.
Often being the case, the fast break game was in full display for Tom Izzo’s squad, with Michigan State forcing ten turnovers and turning them into 20 points, with 16 coming in the fast break. After a sluggish start on the road, the Spartans’ 61 second half points was its most in a half in Big Ten play this season, helping to earn Izzo’s 11th Big Ten regular season title, matching him with the legendary Bob Knight and Piggy Lambert for most in conference history.
Michigan State’s title celebrations will coast into Sunday when it hosts in-state rival Michigan at the Breslin Center, before the conference’s top 15 teams meet up in Indianapolis next week for the Big Ten Tournament.
With an impressive 25-5 overall record, an 11-4 mark in Quad 1 games, and metrics all inside the top 16, Michigan State looks destined to earn a top two seed in the NCAA Tournament, with Selection Sunday just over a week away.
