Lipscomb, North Alabama, Jacksonville, and Queens emerge victorious on Monday night to advance to ASUN semifinals

The Atlantic Sun got a two-day head start on every other conference when it comes to conference tournament play, and with the spotlight on, the conference has delivered some exciting contests. After the first round action on Sunday night saw Central Arkansas and Austin Peay punch their tickets to the quarterfinals, six teams joined in on the action on Monday night.

Top-seeded Lipscomb hosted Central Arkansas in the night cap, but we’ll take care of that one first, as the Bisons cruised to an 84-66 victory. Senior guard Joe Anderson was the key for Lipscomb, finishing with 28 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Anderson shot 10-of-15 from the floor, including an unbelievable 8-of-12 from three-point range in a career-high night. Lipscomb’s stars Jacob Ognacevic and Will Pruitt both added solid performances of their own, as Ognacevic scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Pruitt scored 19 points and grabbed nine boards.

Moving down to Florence Alabama, the second-seeded North Alabama Lions claimed a 90-64 win over Austin Peay, a team that had given them a couple of scares during the regular season. The energy at Flowers Hall was top-notch from the get-go this time around, and even with a brewing rivalry between the two schools, there was no stopping the Lions on Monday night. Jacari Lane, a name you may want to remember come the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, finished with 31 points to lead the way for North Alabama, hitting nine of his 13 shots and going 7-of-8 from behind the arc.

The two tightly contested games of the ASUN quarterfinals went down in the state of Florida, the first of which saw fourth-seeded Jacksonville edge out fifth-seeded Eastern Kentucky for the second year running in the conference tournament. This time it wasn’t an upset, but once again it was Robert McCray V who was the Colonels’ worst nightmare. McCray was a killer in this tournament a year ago and looks to have that same energy in him this time around as well. McCray finished with 26 points, ten rebounds, and five assists, leading Jacksonville in all three categories en route to a 78-67 home win.

In the lone upset of the round, Queens took down FGCU 71-65 behind Leo Colimerio’s 21 points. The Royals shot 41.2% from three and knocked down 20 of their 29 free throw attempts, taking a lead in the second half and holding off the Eagles late. The win marked the third consecutive year in which Queens ended FGCU’s season in the ASUN Tournament, a truly remarkable feat, especially when you consider these are the first three seasons that Queens has been a Division I program.

With a much-needed timeframe of two days’ rest, the ASUN Tournament will resume on Thursday night with two semifinal matchups. Because of reseeding, second-seeded North Alabama will host fourth-seeded Jacksonville at 7:00 ET while top-seeded Lipscomb will host Queens at 8:00 ET on Thursday night. The ASUN is always extra fun because it’s the first conference tournament each year, but the excitement is magnified when you realize just how many special stat lines and storylines lay within it.
