#10 Kentucky takes down #6 Florida in a 106-100, high scoring thriller

Saturday brought plenty of headlines across the sport, but the biggest belonged to the SEC, the country’s top-ranked conference according to KenPom. The conference saw three top 25 clashes on Saturday, with the most crucial being Florida’s trip to Rupp Arena. The Gators put their 13-0 non-conference record on the line in one of college basketball’s most prestigious buildings but fell short late in an early tip.

An 11:00 a.m. local tip-off, the offenses for these top ten squads were anything but sluggish, with both teams shooting over 50% from the field and ten players scoring in double figures. Kentucky’s balance has been the focus in year one under Mark Pope, and we saw that in full force on Saturday. Koby Brea’s 23 points and seven three-pointers off the bench led the way, but all five starters scored 14 or more points.

Throughout the 40 minutes, the Wildcats got winning contributions from everyone, something that is always crucial to win close games in conference play. Brea had three straight threes in a two-minute stretch with under eight minutes to play, but Andrew Carr and Lamont Butler carried the Wildcats down the stretch with big baskets and trips to the free throw line.

Florida went down swinging, but the combined 59 points from Walter Clayton Jr. (33 points) and Alijah Martin (26 points) weren’t enough for Todd Golden’s squad. One of the final three undefeated teams in the country, Florida has a chance to bounce back and burst 14-0 Tennessee’s bubble on Tuesday night.

Florida and Kentucky weren’t the only ranked teams clashing from the SEC on Saturday though, as Arkansas traveled to undefeated Tennessee and Alabama hosted undefeated Oklahoma. The one in Lexington was the only tightly contested one however, with Tennessee and Alabama boasting 24 and 28-point margins of victory. Tennessee won 76-52, highlighted by Igor Milicic Jr.’s 13 points and 18 rebounds. Alabama’s Mark Sears looks to be back in form after a rough stretch to start the season, scoring 22 points and dishing out 10 assists in a 107-79 win over Oklahoma.
