Kansas avenges road loss to Iowa State, sends struggling Cyclones home with three straight losses

38-0. That is Bill Self’s record at Kansas on ESPN Big Monday at Allen Fieldhouse after picking up a 69-52 win over Iowa State on Monday night. Just 48 hours after blowing a 21-point lead to Baylor, it was a quick turnaround to play on Monday night, but the Jayhawks looked desperate for a win and brought the fire with them from the opening tip.

Matching up against a team in Iowa State that needed a win just as bad, with the Cyclones losing their last two and three of their last five, Kansas didn’t let Iowa State feel any hope at all. The Jayhawks had a 14-12 advantage just over nine minutes into the game, then outscored Iowa State 21-7 to take a 35-19 lead into halftime. The lead would prove to be too much for Iowa State to overcome, as the Cyclones never got within 15 points the rest of the way.

The loss also magnified some glaring issues with Iowa State, as Kansas followed a successful recipe from Arizona and Kansas State, who picked up wins over the Cyclones last week. With Milan Momcilovic missing the last seven games for Iowa State, teams have started to realize there is a complete lack of spacing and lack of depth from the rest of the team. Last night, Iowa State got just 39 minutes out of its bench, with the four players combining for just one field goal attempt.

As a team, Iowa State shot 3-21 from behind the arc, with Tamin Lipsey, Curtis Jones, and Keshon Gilbert each converting just one of their 5+ attempts. There simply isn’t enough spacing on the floor to keep defenses honest, and the teams crowd the lane and force Iowa State’s non-shooters to beat them from outside, as its virtually impossible to get into the paint with the mass of bodies inside. Lipsey, Jones, and Gilbert are still one of the most talented backcourts in the country when they’re rolling, but without Momcilovic to change things at the forward position, I think I’m ready to hop off the Iowa State bandwagon.

As much as you can point at what went wrong for Iowa State, Kansas also brought a great all-around team performance to Allen Fieldhouse on Monday. The biggest story was Zeke Mayo scoring 17 points, with 15 coming from his 5-of-6 performance from behind the arc. The spacing for Kansas has also been questioned at times with Dajuan Harris Jr., KJ Adams Jr., and Hunter Dickinson all playing 30 minutes a night, but the South Dakota State transfer has started to get really comfortable, outside of a rough showing at Baylor on Saturday. Dickinson finished with 14 points and nine rebounds while Harris added 12 points and four assists to round out KU’s double-digit scorers.

Defensively is where Kansas shined brightest on Monday night though, holding a high-powered Iowa State team to 52 points, protecting the paint with authority, as Dickinson and Flory Bidunga each finished with four blocks on the night.

Next up for Kansas is an emotional tilt in Manhattan against Kansas State, with the Wildcats coming off their own win over Iowa State on Saturday. Iowa State has lost three in a row and four of its last six, looking to regroup Saturday at home against TCU.
