Jaemyn Brakefield goes for 19 off the bench to lead Ole Miss to upset win on Senior Night

Wednesday brought another great night in the sport of college basketball in the first week of March, with the Senior Night showdown in Oxford between #4 Tennessee and Ole Miss drawing the most headlines. It wasn’t a must-win scenario for Chris Beard’s squad, but an inspiring performance was more than needed. Leading into Wednesday, Ole Miss was just 1-3 in its last four games, with the lone win coming at home in a three-point escape over Oklahoma this past Saturday.

Both teams brought it from the tip in a high scoring first half as far as a Tennessee game is usually concerned. The Vols would open up to a 29-20 lead before an 11-1 Ole Miss run in large part due to the play of Matthew Murrell and Malik Dia gave the Rebels a lead. Tennessee would regain control before the intermission though, as Chaz Lanier and Jahmai Mashack knocked down back-to-back threes to finish the half up 41-36.

A Felix Okpara and-one gave Tennessee a 44-36 lead early in the second half, but once again with their backs against the wall, the Rebels rallied off a run, tying the game at 44-44. After that point, neither team would lead by more than seven and the lead would seesaw a handful of times in the final eight minutes.

Trailing 56-49, Ole Miss forward Jaemyn Brakefield, on his senior night, took matters into his own hands. He would score seven straight points before Jaylen Murray tied the game at 58-58 for Ole Miss. After Zakai Zeigler regained the lead for Tennessee, Brakefield went back to work, scoring the next eight points for Ole Miss, the last of which was a free throw to convert an and-one, once again tying the game at 66-66.

Finishing the night with 19 points, all 19 for Brakefield would come in the second half, as he gave Ole Miss a four-point lead with under a minute to play before scoring the winning bucket off of an offensive rebound with seven seconds to go.

Already known as of the best individual characters in the league, Brakefield staked his claim on an all-conference spot with an outstanding performance on senior night against the nation’s fourth ranked team, hitting eight of his nine shots and converting three and-one opportunities.

The Rebels will finish the regular season with a tough visit to Florida on Saturday, before heading to Nashville for what should be a fantastic SEC Tournament next week.
