Trailing by six with ten seconds to play, Houston stuns Kansas on the road in double overtime

After missing out on its three biggest non-conference opportunities, Houston’s trip to Allen Fieldhouse was as must-win as it could get for any team in the history of the sport. The game on Saturday night was a classic Big 12 battle, extremely physical, and both teams never out of it until the final buzzer.

Kansas took a nine-point lead just 11 seconds into the second half, but Houston would respond with a 13-0 run to take control. For much of the half, it was an even game, until Kansas stretched its lead to six with ninety seconds to go on a Flory Bidunga dunk.

Then, the first Houston comeback ensued. Milos Uzan hit a jumper, then Houston’s defense stood strong to force a shot clock violation. After a quick review to adjust the time, Houston went down the floor and Uzan floated it up to bring the Cougars within two.

Once again, Houston’s defense was the calling card, forcing a five-second call on the inbounds opportunity. With the ball back, Houston was fouled shortly after, bringing J’Wan Roberts to the free throw line, who was 1-5 from that spot on the night. Roberts would sink both to tie the game at 66-66, and Kansas would fail to get a shot off on its final possession after the Cougars defense blew up a Dajuan Harris Jr. and Hunter Dickinson pick and roll.

On we went to overtime, where Kansas took control, scoring 13 points all from either Bidunga or Rylan Griffen. When L.J. Cryer missed a three-pointer with 21 seconds to go and Houston trailing by six, Cougars fans likely started turning their TVs off.

If they did, they missed one of the best late comebacks you will ever see.

Harris missed both free throw attempts, giving Houston a sliver of hope. Emanuel Sharp knocked down a three-pointer with eight seconds left, making the score just 79-76 in favor of Kansas. Then, another defensive stand from Houston an inbounds fiasco from Kansas guard Zeke Mayo. After failing to get the ball inbounded in time in regulation, Mayo threw this one straight to Uzan, who dished it off to Mylik Wilson for an open three, tying the game at 79-79 and sending the game to a second overtime.

In the final minute of both regulation and the first overtime period, Kansas held a six-point lead inside their own building. Both times, the Allen Fieldhouse crowd was left stunned as the game continued on.

In the second overtime, it was Houston who put its clamps on the game, with Sharp and Uzan knocking down back-to-back threes to give the Cougars a lead they would never give back. Houston would its free throws late, sealing a 92-86 victory inside Allen Fieldhouse, a first signature win of the season for Kelvin Sampson’s squad.

Roberts, an extremely consistent performer for Sampson’s Houston teams over the last three seasons had one of his best games of his career, scoring 24 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out five assists. Roberts struggled from the free throw line overall but came up big when needed at the end of regulation.

Uzan impressed, playing by far his best game in a Houston uniform, and finally showing up late. The point guard who transferred in from Oklahoma this past offseason would finish with 17 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, flirting ever so closely with a triple double.

Mylik Wilson’s game also can’t go unnoticed for Houston, converting eight of his 11 shots and scoring 18 points off the bench, helping the Cougars stem the tide late in the first half and hitting some big shots in the second half.

For Kansas, the two guys you could really walk away impressed with were Bidunga and Griffen, who both had big games and came up with some big plays for the Jayhawks, especially in the first overtime. Bidunga finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Griffen hit five of his six three-point attempts, scoring 17 points and grabbing seven rebounds off the bench.

Houston’s win finally gives them a result that matches among the best teams in the sport, with plenty chances for more still coming as the Cougars will face Iowa State, Arizona, Kansas again, Texas Tech twice, and Baylor twice before the regular season finishes. Quietly, Houston ranks third at KenPom, but after this big win I think people will start to take notice that Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars are once again legit.
