The list of names in the transfer portal is already over 1000 names long and still growing
The transfer portal and its impact on college basketball continues to grow year after year, and this year’s list of portal entries is well on track to exceed last year’s final count. The portal opened when the calendar turned to Monday, March 24, and the flow of entries has steadily continued over the past 36 hours.
Tuesday saw the biggest portal entrant yet, when Drake guard Bennett Stirtz (19 ppg, 4 rpg, 6 apg) announced he would be entering the transfer portal and following former Drake head coach Ben McCollum to Iowa. This news instantly propels Iowa to near the top of the conference’s list of contenders as the Hawkeyes have brought in one of the nation’s best basketball minds and his all-conference point guard in the door right behind him.
Going alphabetical by former school, the rest of this big-name recap will start with Arizona State freshman guard Joson Sanon (12 ppg, 3 rpg) and Baylor junior wing Langston Love (9 ppg, 3 rpg). Both should have plenty of high major suitors after mildly successful seasons, and Sanon especially should have plenty of calls this week.
At Cal, Mark Madsen has already lost three key players, headlined by freshman guard Jeremiah Wilkinson (15 ppg). Along with Wilkinson, both BJ Omot (11 ppg, 3 rpg in 4 GP) and Joshua Ola-Joseph (7 ppg, 4 rpg). Wilkinson will be a first-time transfer after a successful freshman season in the ACC, while Omot and Ola-Joseph hit the portal for the second consecutive offseason.
Outside of the power conferences, Gonzaga guard Dusty Stromer (4 ppg, 2 rpg) and High Point’s Kezza Giffa (15 ppg, 3 apg) and Kimani Hamilton (13 ppg, 5 rpg) should all receive high-major opportunities this offseason. Stromer was somewhat forced out of a stacked Gonzaga lineup this past season, while Giffa and Hamilton look to take the next step up after leading High Point to its first-ever NCAA Tournament.
In the Midwest, Indiana, Iowa, and Iowa State all lost key contributors, as Mackenzie Mgbako (12 ppg, 5 rpg at Indiana), Malik Reneau (13 ppg, 6 rpg at Indiana), Owen Freeman (17 ppg, 7 rpg at Iowa), Josh Dix (14 ppg, 3 apg), and Dishon Jackson (9 ppg, 5 rpg) hit the portal.
Headed back outside the power conferences, Nevada’s Nick Davidson (16 ppg, 7 rpg), North Dakota State’s Jacari White (17 ppg, 4 rpg), and San Diego State’s Nick Boyd (13 ppg, 4 rpg, 4 apg) and Magoon Gwath (9 ppg, 5 rpg) all look to head to the promised land of high major hoops.
Rounding out the list of headliners thus far, Providence, Virginia, West Virginia, and Xavier all lost studs with Bryce Hopkins (17 ppg, 8 rpg in 3 GP at Providence), Isaac McKneely (14 ppg, 3 apg at Virginia), Tucker DeVries (15 ppg, 5 rpg at West Virginia in 8 GP), and Dailyn Swain (11 ppg, 6 rpg at Xavier) all putting their names in the portal.
College basketball’s transfer portal truly is the wild, wild west in its current stage, and the list of talented players in the portal should only grow by the end of each day.
