Stegman Coliseum produces a thriller as Georgia holds on late to stun #3 Florida
Plenty can change in a one-day span when you’re living life on the bubble, and Georgia just found itself the best win among bubble teams since Indiana’s big win at Michigan State two weeks ago. It ended up being a lot tougher to edge out the win than the Bulldogs may have thought after the game’s opening 12 minutes, but the win should vault them into the projected field nonetheless.
As the Bulldogs shot 10-of-18 from behind the arc against Florida, four of the makes came inside the game’s opening six minutes. Finishing with 21 points, Georgia guard Silas Demary Jr. had 14 points in the first half, including a three to put Georgia up 39-13 with 7:53 to go until halftime.
Florida is considered to be one of the best teams nationally for a reason though, and behind an eventual 30-point night from Will Richard, the Gators slowly but surely crawled back into the game on the road. By halftime, Georgia’s lead would be cut down to 16, as the Bulldogs led 51-35.
Florida trimmed the deficit to single digits a number of times in the second half, but it seemed as if Georgia had every answer. Trailing 78-67 at the under-4 media timeout, Florida turned up the heat and finally got the run it needed, scoring 13 straight including two threes from Walter Clayton Jr. and the go-ahead bucket from Thomas Haugh. Down by two and trailing for the first time all night, Georgia turned to sophomore guard Blue Cain with under a minute to go, with the youngster firing from three to put Georgia back up 81-80.
After a terrible three-minute stretch, Georgia regained composure and put the game to rest with three straight defensive stands. The Bulldogs would take the win on their home floor 88-83 against the #3 team in the country, leading to a storming of the court. Demary led the way, but four other Georgia players finished in double figures, as Asa Newell scored 15, Tyrin Larwence scored 14, RJ Godfrey scored 10, and Cain added 12 points.
Following a 2-9 stretch, this win could be all the momentum Georgia needs to hear its name called on Selection Sunday. With road trips to Texas and South Carolina before Senior Day to close the season against Vanderbilt, Georgia will have to be on its toes to avoid any bad losses though. As it stands, Georgia is likely two wins away from securing its place in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 under Mark Fox.
