24 points from Micah Peavy leads Georgetown to comeback road win over Villanova

Martin Luther King Jr. Day brought plenty of daytime hoops, but it was the evening matchup in Philadelphia that stole the headlines across the sport on Monday. Ed Cooley and Kyle Neptune led their teams into the game in opposite directions, with Cooley’s Hoyas dropping their last four while Neptune’s Wildcats were off to a 5-3 start in Big East play.

The drama in this one started halfway through the first half, when after some choice words were exchanged between players from both teams, Wooga Poplar was judged to have tried to throw a punch, earning himself a flagrant two foul and an ejection from the game.

Jordan Longino did his best to make up for Poplar’s loss on the exterior, scoring 18 points and hitting three of his six shots from behind the arc. Eric Dixon, quietly one of the best players in the sport, led Villanova with 29 points and after he and Longino scored in quick succession, the Wildcats had an eight-point lead with under five minutes to play.

The only problem was that Villanova would be held scoreless from there on.

Two Thomas Sorber free throws made it 57-63, but Villanova held on defensively to maintain a six-point lead with under 90 seconds to play. Then, things really went south.

Malik Mack converted an and-one for Georgetown. Micah Peavy forced a turnover and scored on the other end. After getting a defensive stop, the Hoyas had a chance to win it. Peavy drove in and converted another bucket, giving Georgetown a 64-63 lead. With about a second left, Villanova went long, and Dixon got a shot away, but it bounced off the rim and Georgetown had escaped.

For the Hoyas, it really felt as if they changed the season in the last five minutes at Finneran Pavilion last night.

Peavy had his best game in a Hoyas uniform thus far, scoring 24 points and hitting nine of his 16 shots from the field, including those two late baskets. Sorber has been among the best in the highly talented freshmen class this season, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.

In an unforgiving Big East, it may be a struggle to reach the NCAA Tournament, but the Hoyas made up a lot of ground with the road win last night. Georgetown will visit Providence on Saturday in what should be another emotional game for Cooley, before hosting St. John’s and Butler to finish the month of January.
