CJ Gunn’s big game leads DePaul past shorthanded Georgetown on the road
It’s been a treacherous past couple of seasons to be a DePaul fan, but after 728 days, DePaul has finally won another Big East regular season game. After a 7-0 start to life under Chris Holtmann, the Blue Demons dropped nine of their next 11 games before Friday night. You could feel it was only a matter of time before the Blue Demons did flip the script, coming up on the short end of three overtime games in Big East play already this season.
At last night’s game in the capital, nothing was left for question, as DePaul led for the final 37 minutes of the game after Conor Enright put the road team up 6-5. Off the bench, Layden Blocker has a big 7-0 solo run late in the first half to push the lead to 39-22. Georgetown, although shorthanded, crawled back and it got close late, but Troy D’Amico came up with a huge three to push the lead to 68-63. From there, Enright and CJ Gunn iced the game, hitting five of six free throws to give DePaul a 73-68 win.
Blocker would finish with 14 off the bench, hitting four of his eight shots. The sophomore point guard has showed flashes throughout the season with big games against St. John’s and NIU, and DePaul fans will hope this performance shows what’s to come the rest of the season. Gunn, the Indiana transfer, continued his hot streak on the wing for the Blue Demons, scoring 17 points, his fourth straight game with 16 or more.
We knew going into the year it would take a team effort with all-around solid three-point shooting from everybody for DePaul to take games off of Big East competition. The Blue Demons hit seven of their 15 attempts from behind the arc last night, their first game since the blowout loss at Villanova with under 10 makes, but a 46.7% mark, which is hard to complain about.
There are no easy games in the Big East, but with some positive momentum now, it’s exciting to think about what this team can accomplish in the future under Holtmann.
