Kansas State uses second-half comeback to stay alive on the bubble

Kansas State came into the Big 12 Tournament knowing they would need a couple of wins to have a chance at reaching the NCAA Tournament and jumpstarted their case on Wednesday with a 78-74 win over Texas. Tylor Perry led the Wildcats with 21 points and hit three three-pointers. A 10-point halftime deficit was overturned quickly by the Wildcats, as they started the second half on a 19-8 run and led for the remainder of the game. Max Abmas was doing his best to keep Texas in the game, but couldn’t hit enough shots late on, finishing with 26 points on 9-20 shooting. The win for K-State moves them to 19-13 and sets up a quarterfinal date with Iowa State on Thursday night. Texas will wait until Selection Sunday to see where they will be headed, likely along the eight or nine seed line.

TCU beats Oklahoma to push Sooners closer to the bubble

The matchup between Kansas State and Texas wasn’t the only Big 12 Tournament matchup with bubble implications, as TCU and Oklahoma played on the same court just a few hours prior. This game was viewed as a “win and you’re in” and a “lose and you’re on the edge of your seat Sunday night”, and it definitely will have those implications. TCU got a great performance out of their star Emanuel Miller, who finished with 26 points on 9-13 shooting. The Sooners were without Javian McCollum and Rivaldo Soares, so it will be interesting to see how the committee views the loss. Oklahoma is now 20-12 but is 7-11 in their last 18 games. The Horned Frogs should have no problems making the field, moving to 21-11 and playing Houston tomorrow in a nothing-to-lose situation in the Big 12 quarterfinals.

Villanova escapes a brutal loss with late winner against DePaul

We nearly saw the stunner of the season late Wednesday night in Madison Square Garden, as the now 3-29 DePaul Blue Demons had the tournament-hopeful Villanova Wildcats on the ropes for 40 minutes. DePaul’s Jalen Terry was doing everything he could to lead his team to an upset, and finished with 18 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists. For those unfamiliar with Jalen Terry, he stands at just six feet tall, and yes, the last sentence was correct, he grabbed FIFTEEN rebounds in the game against Villanova. The Wildcats got 21 points out of Eric Dixon, but the biggest bucket for the Wildcats came from senior guard Justin Moore. Moore’s three-pointer from the left wing with eight seconds left gave Villanova a 58-57 lead, a lead that would hold as the final score. Villanova will match up against a Tyler Kolek-less Marquette team in Thursday’s quarterfinal round after escaping DePaul.
