Jaedon LeDee’s 23 points leads San Diego State to home win over New Mexico

San Diego State came into Friday night having won 34 of its previous 35 home games, with the only loss being to New Mexico last season. It was the Lobos who came to town on Friday night, and like the 12 other San Diego State opponents that have visited Viejas Arena this season, as they would leave suffering a loss. Jaedon LeDee, one of the favorites for Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, led the Aztecs to an 81-70 win with 23 points and four steals. Darrion Trammell and Elijah Saunders both stepped up to make plays late in the second half for San Diego State last night and gave me increased confidence that this team can once again make a run in the NCAA tournament. Both teams played sloppily at times, San Diego State committing 20 turnovers, New Mexico committing 19. Jaelen House crushed Aztec fans’ hearts last year in the road win, but couldn’t do enough tonight, leading his team with 22 points and four steals, as the Lobos came up short. San Diego State takes firm control of second place in the Mountain West at 9-4 and could move into a tie for first place if Utah State falls at Colorado State tomorrow. The Lobos fall to 8-5 in conference play, 20-6 overall, and with three losses in five, will need to turn it around to make sure they hear their name called on Selection Sunday.

#4 Marquette faces #1 UConn in Top 5 matchup between the Big East’s top two teams (3:00 ET, FOX)

Two red hot teams, UConn and Marquette, will meet Saturday in a game that could decide the Big East regular season title. UConn has won 13 games in a row and sit at 13-1 in Big East play. Marquette is second in the Big East at 10-3 and has won its last eight games. The two starting point guards in this game are among the nation’s best and are likely each other’s biggest competition for Big East Player of the Year. Marquette’s Tyler Kolek averages 16.1 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game, 7.4 assists per game, and 1.7 steals per game, all while shooting above 49% from the field and 41% from three-point range. UConn’s Tristen Newton averages 15.0 points per game and leads the Huskies in both rebounds per game at 6.7 and assists per game at 5.7. Marquette’s Oso Ighodaro (14.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg) will matchup against UConn’s Donovan Clingan (12.1 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 2.3 bpg) with both among the league’s best big men. The Huskies will have home court advantage, but the only thing for certain in tomorrow’s game is that one of the long win streaks will snap. I’ll give Kolek and the Golden Eagles a chance, but this is a game UConn should win at home. My Pick: UConn 79-75

#13 Auburn hosts #22 Kentucky with College Gameday in town (6:00 ET, ESPN)

Neville Arena has been the home of Auburn blowout wins this season, with the Tigers 13-0 at home and all wins coming by double digits. Kentucky comes to town on Saturday having won just three of their last seven games. Johni Broome (16.2 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 2.4 bpg) and Jaylin Williams (13.4 ppg, 4.9 rpg) have been dominant at home this season and will look to continue that vs a young Kentucky frontcourt. It will be interesting to see how the dynamic Kentucky freshmen guards handle the hostile environment at The Jungle, specifically Reed Sheppard (12.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.2 apg, 2.5 spg) and Rob Dillingham (14.8 ppg, 4.0 apg). Auburn should have the advantage with their experience all over the court to go along with their dominant home record, but if Kentucky gets hot this could be a high-scoring, back and forth game on Saturday night. My Pick: Auburn 90-83
