Sunflower Showdown sees K-State upset #4 Kansas
Kansas and Kansas State came into Monday night’s matchup trending in entirely different directions, but the result didn’t hold up to the trends. #4 Kansas was coming off two wins, a blowout over Oklahoma State and a terrific shooting performance over #5 Houston. The Wildcats were coming off of four straight losses, three of them by double digits. Last night in Bramlage Coliseum, nicknamed the Octagon of Doom, Kansas blew out of the gates in the second half to take a 41-30 lead and it looked like they were ready to open up the game. K-State had other ideas, following a 9-0 KU start to the half with an 11-0 run of their own to tie the game at 41-41. The rest of the second half and overtime was back and forth, with K-State’s Tylor Perry scoring 21 of his 26 points during the final 25 minutes. The biggest of Perry’s baskets came with 1:58 left in overtime, an open three to stretch the Wildcats lead to four, ultimately putting the game out of reach. The score finished 75-70 in favor of Kansas State.
Virginia holds Miami to all-time low scoring total
Virginia quietly rode a six-game win streak into Monday’s game vs Miami and continued the streak in dominant fashion. The Cavaliers would hold the high-powered Hurricane offense to just 38 points, an all-time record low in ACC play for Miami. Virginia lead 29-17 at the half and would stretch the lead even more throughout the second half. Reece Beekman finished the game with 16 points, four rebounds, and seven assists to lead UVA, whereas Norchad Omier was the only Hurricane player to reach double digits, finishing with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Virginia won 60-38, giving them a win that will have them inching closer to reaching yet another NCAA tournament. Jim Larranaga’s Miami squad, just a year removed from a Final Four appearance, will now need a huge turnaround to get back to the Big Dance.
Texas Tech visits Baylor in Big 12 battle at Foster Pavilion (9:00 ET, ESPN)
Texas Tech and Baylor will meet in Waco with both teams tied for second place in the Big 12 at 5-3. This is the first of two matchups between the teams, with the return date in Lubbock being the final day of the regular season. The home team, Baylor, comes into Tuesday’s matchup riding back-to-back wins, at UCF and at home to Iowa State. The Red Raiders are fading away after rising up national rankings, losing back-to-back games, the first on the road to TCU, and the second at home to Cincinnati on Saturday. The biggest matchup of the night should be how the two backcourts fare, with star freshman Ja’Kobe Walter (14.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg) and RayJ Dennis (13.4 ppg, 6.4 apg) for Baylor matching up against Texas Tech’s Pop Isaacs (17.6 ppg, 4th in Big 12) and Joe Toussaint (12.5 ppg, 4.2 apg). Look for Foster Pavilion to be rocking again, hosting a third straight game against an AP Top 25 team.
